J. Clive Chariton or or or or ARION PECKUMN Perry THE DES MOINES REGISTER I SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1999 7M: Theory on tiny comets debated By ANN McGLYNN REGISTER Iowa CITY BUREAU Iowa City, la. The battle over University of Iowa space physicist's small-comet theory is intensifying between of I scientists. of I astronomer Robert Mutel announced this week that his research failed to detect evidence supporting a 13-year-old theory that small comets composed of snow continually bombard Earth. of I professor Louis Frank, the originator of the small-comet theory, said Friday that Mutel is wrong.

Frank was angered by the University of Iowa's news release on Mutel's findings. Steve Parrott, interim director of university relations, said the university stood behind the news release. "It's our job to publish faculty research," Parrott said. "We covered Robert Mutel just as we have Louis Frank." Frank said he paid for Mutel's work from his own budget. Frank said he will present a paper in a couple of weeks from the same data showing the existence of the small comets made of snow.

"There is nothing civil about it at all," Frank said of his relationship with Mutel. He and Mutel were at the annual American Geophysical Union conTerence in San Francisco this week. Mutel could not be reached for comment. In the University of Iowa news release, Mutel said he was glad be able to contribute data to the liscussion and said the debate over he small-comet theory will likely continue for many years to come. The small-comet theory, develped by Frank and of I research scientist John Sigwarth 13 years ago, rays that thousands of snow comets veighing 20 to 40 tons bombard the Carth's atmosphere every day.

Frank and his colleagues built: a pecial camera to take pictures of he northern lights, including the irst images of the complete ring of he northern lights from above the lorth Pole. Some of the images contained. nexplained dark spots. Frank and igwarth concluded the dark spots presented clouds of water vapor eing released high above Earth's tmosphere by the disintegration of mall comets composed mostly of now. They said the comets would have dded about 1 inch of water to the Tarth's oceans every 20,000 years.

Frank says their small size 20- 0-30-feet in diameter makes bservation difficult. teens admit rilling couple rom Ottumwa Frank His idea SOCIATED PRESS Waco, Texas.
